Since his election in 2018, our Attorney General Phil Weiser has been active in defending Coloradan’s rights and recovering hundreds of millions of dollars for Coloradans relating to the opioid crisis, consumer fraud, and unfair treatment in college loans, among others.
As it became clear that the U.S. Supreme Court was poised to overturn Roe v Wade, the Colorado legislature passed, and our Governor Jared Polis signed into law, Colorado’s Reproductive Health Equity Act. This Act codifies each person’s fundamental right to make reproductive healthcare decisions free from government interference.
Our Colorado Attorney General has the responsibility to enforce Colorado’s laws -- including its Reproductive Health Equity Act. AG Phil Weiser has clearly pledged to uphold the provisions of that Act and defend reproductive rights in Colorado by saying that our state has a long and proud history of leading on reproductive rights, including protecting access to abortion services and ensuring access to birth control. And that he will defend Colorado’s reproductive rights laws.
Weiser has pointed out that in early August, even Kansas voters (a traditionally red state) voted overwhelmingly to defend a woman’s right to choose. But, at that same time, his opponent, Republican John Kellner, had held that the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade was rightly decided.
As the opinion piece in the Colorado Sun (July 29) pointed out (link to full article is here):
“We know where Weiser stands and will defend the Reproductive Health Equity Act. But, his opponent running for attorney general, Republican John Kellner, has been completely silent on abortion access. He won’t say whether as attorney general he would defend the new law or disregard it, allowing local governments to go unchecked if they enact abortion restrictions.
“Should he be our next attorney general, Kellner will be the sole decision maker in whether the State defends the Reproductive Health Equity Act or lets local governments defy state law. With the Dobbs decision, this is no abstract possibility.
“With Roe v Wade gone, it’s imperative that we know where all candidates for office stand on reproductive rights. But it’s especially critical that we know where candidates for Colorado attorney general stand, since that person could be the sole decision-maker on whether the state stands against local ordinances curbing abortion rights.”
So you know where Phil Weiser stands on this issue -- but the Republican candidate is not clear about his intentions. Doesn’t that tell you all you need to decide?
Vote for Phil Weiser to continue as Colorado’s Attorney General.
