We are so fortunate to have two such caring and concerned persons representing us in Congress. Senator Michael Bennet and Congressman Joe Neguse work closely together to preserve Colorado's most amazing resources -- its history and beauty.
As a prime example of coordination between Michael and Joe, you likely read in our local papers about the recent donation of land to Rocky Mountain National Park.
This is the result of House and Senate legislation introduced by Michael and Joe in 2020 and finalized this month by a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This donation is a 40-acre parcel of land to RMNP by former astronaut Vance Brand and his family. This land is adjacent to the Park’s eastern boundary and will provide additional protection to the Park’s ecosystem.
Another significant coordinated effort is work on the CORE Act by Michael and Joe. This legislation has passed the House, but stalled in the Senate (due to filibuster rules).
CORE stands for the Colorado Outdoor Recreation & Economy Act. It combines 4 Colorado public lands bills:
• the Continental Divide Recreation, Wilderness and Camp Hale Legacy Act,
• the San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act,
• the Thompson Divide Withdrawal and Protection Act, and
• the Curecanti National Recreation Area Boundary Establishment Act.
Such legislation would protect over 400,000 acres in Colorado and would establish a new historic designation for Camp Hale (the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division training area during WWII).
This plan has been in the works for more than a decade -- passing the Democratic controlled House, but not yet passing in the Senate (due to the filibuster). See this CPR article for a good discussion about CORE.
Electing more Democrats in 2022 would be a giant step toward making CORE a reality. Let’s do our part by re-electing both our Democratic Senator Michael Bennet and our Democratic Congressman Joe Neguse in 2022.
